The Rugby Foundation of Western Australia is proud to announce the recipients of its inaugural Grant Program for the 2024/25 funding cycle.

Two Western Australian clubs – the Southern Lions, with their All Abilities program, and the Perth Rams, with a coach education initiative – have been awarded a combined total of $7,500 to support grassroots rugby across the state.

Sean Lee, Chair of the Rugby Foundation of WA, said: "As part of our purpose to support the wider rugby community, The Rugby Foundation of WA is honoured to award these two grants to The Southern Lions All Abilities Program and the Perth Rams. The All Abilities program is truly nation-leading and has provided opportunities to many who thought sport was not possible for them, and the Perth Rams coaching clinics will ensure those entering the sport from a do so in a manner that is safe and inclusive. The Rugby Foundation of WA could not be prouder to support such great initiatives."

The Foundation is grateful for the messages of appreciation received from recipients, which reinforce the value and purpose of supporting the growth and love for rugby across the entire ecosystem.

Southern Lions – All Abilities Program

The funding will assist the Southern Lions All Abilities program in providing greater opportunities for players during the 2025 season. It will support the expansion of training resources, the enhancement of program delivery, and the subsidisation of travel expenses - ensuring more players are able to take part in team tours and related events.

Southern Lions’ All Abilities program is nation-leading, as the first specialised team in Australia for people with disabilities at its launch eight years ago. Now one of three teams in Western Australia, Southern Lions’ All Abilities team continues to lead the way, with over 30 members, weekly training sessions throughout the year, and touring team opportunities.

The Southern Lions All Abilities team is set to tour New Zealand this September.

Michael Penhaligon, Southern Lions All Abilities Manager, said: “On behalf of the players, coaches, and support staff of our All Abilities Rugby Team, we extend our sincerest and deepest gratitude for your incredibly generous sponsorship of our upcoming trip to New Zealand. Your commitment to inclusivity and your belief in the power of sport to transform lives is truly inspiring.

“This sponsorship represents far more than just financial assistance; it is an investment in the dreams and aspirations of our players. For many of them, this trip to New Zealand is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete internationally, experience a new culture, and showcase their modified game on a global stage”.

Perth Rams – Coach Education Initiative

Perth Rams in Western Australia’s only LGBTQIA+ inclusive club, with predominately sexuality and gender-diverse membership. The club aims to provide the community with greater access to sports in a prejudice-free environment and provide opportunities for all members of the community to thrive in the game for all. The funding provided by the Rugby Foundation of Western Australia will assist in coach development, transforming players and community members into qualified coaches.

This initiative aims to create self-sufficiency for the club, providing them with coaches who understand the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly within the sporting space, without having to rely on assistance from other clubs. In upskilling players and existing coaches, the initiative prioritises safety, education and development, while establishing the foundation for long-term success in the game.

Andrew Ribeiro, President of the Perth Rams, said: “On behalf of the Perth Rams, we sincerely thank the Rugby Foundation WA for supporting our coach development initiative. As an LGBTIQA+ Inclusive team, your backing empowers us to grow not just in numbers, but in leadership and knowledge.

“This support helps us foster safe, inclusive pathways for players and coaches alike. Together, we’re building a more inclusive future for rugby at every level”.

The Perth Rams are currently playing in the Community Grade competition.

With over 10 applications received for the 2024/25 cycle, the Foundation looks forward to ongoing engagement with existing applicants to further develop their submissions and invites new applications for consideration in the 2025/26 funding round.

The next grant application window is expected to open later this year.
