Community sport is entering a new era - one where sustainability is no longer a “nice to have”, but an expectation from participants, partners and the broader community.
But the real opportunity goes beyond environmental responsibility.
The next wave of growth in sport will come from organisations that can turn sustainability into something more - a driver of participation, a creator of revenue, and a platform for deeper community connection.
At RugbyWA, this is the shift we are embracing.
We believe sustainability should not sit on the sidelines as a policy or message. It should be embedded into the way the game is played, experienced and grown.
Turning Strategy into Action
This thinking comes to life through a series of practical, community-led initiatives that connect purpose with participation.
In partnership with Elan Energy Matrix (Elan), RugbyWA has launched SustainABALL - an initiative designed to reduce waste while removing barriers to entry for young players.
The concept is simple but powerful: Kids bring in their old or unused backyard rugby balls and receive a new one, with the old ball recycled rather than ending up in landfill.
What makes SustainABALL impactful is not just the environmental benefit, but the broader outcome it creates:
- More kids equipped to play the game
- Families engaged through a positive, values-driven initiative
- A clear demonstration of how sustainability can directly support participation growth
It is sustainability not as a message - but as a mechanism to grow the game.
Creating Sustainable Clubs – Environmentally and Financially
At club level, RugbyWA’s partnership with Containers for Change extends this thinking even further.
Through this initiative, clubs are encouraged to collect and recycle eligible containers, generating funds that are reinvested directly back into their club operations.
Importantly, this is not just a passive program - it is designed to drive engagement and behaviour change across the community.
A state-wide club recycling ladder will track participation, with cash incentives awarded to top-performing clubs, creating a competitive and collaborative approach to sustainability.
The result is twofold:
- Environmental impact through increased recycling
- Financial sustainability for clubs via a new, accessible revenue stream
For many community clubs, this represents a simple but effective way to align purpose with practical outcomes.
A New Model for Sports and Business
These initiatives reflect a broader shift in how sport can create value - not just for participants, but for partners.
For businesses, the opportunity is changing.
It is no longer just about brand visibility. It is about alignment with programs that deliver real, measurable impact in the community.
By embedding partners into initiatives like SustainABALL and the Containers for Change Impact Ladder, RugbyWA is creating platforms where:
- Brands are connected to authentic, purpose-led programs
- Impact can be seen and measured at grassroots level
- Engagement is driven through participation, not just promotion
This is where sport becomes more than a game - it becomes a vehicle for meaningful connection.
Looking Ahead
As RugbyWA continues its journey towards the Rugby World Cup 2027 and beyond, sustainability will play a central role in how we grow and evolve the game across Western Australia.
The focus is clear: Build programs that are scalable, community-driven and capable of delivering long-term impact.
Because the future of sport will not be defined by participation alone - but by the value it creates for communities, partners and the environment.
Partner with Purpose
RugbyWA is actively seeking to work with organisations that share this vision - partners who see sustainability not just as responsibility, but as opportunity.
If your business is looking to connect with community, drive meaningful impact and be part of the next chapter of sport, we’d welcome the conversation.
