Round 2 of the Fortescue Women’s Premier Grade kicked off this weekend, marking the return of UWA after a Round 1 bye.
At Success Regional Sporting Facility on Saturday, UWA saw their first dance of the season against newcomers Southern Lions.
2024 Community X’s Grand Final Player of the Match, Nicole Ross, proved to be a force to be reckoned with for the Lionesses, with one try and five conversions for the side, pushing them towards victory. With a home ground crowd for Southern Lions, the side saw a 35-17 win over UWA, proving their status as newcomers won’t inhibit their performance.
Tries for Southern Lions were scored by Ross, in addition to Aishling O’Shea, Katie McLaren (2) and Leokadia Tairea. All conversions were scored by Ross, in addition to one team event conversion.
With a Round One bye, their battle against Southern Lions marked the first game of the season for UWA, who see their second season in the Fortescue Women’s Premier Grade. Tries for the side were scored by Sara Kifayatullah, who also completed one conversion, and Bridget Meade, as well as one team event try.
UWA will face the Cottesloe Shegulls in Round 3.
Across the city at Harfield Park, Kalamunda came up against Palmyra in a Semi-Final rematch which proved to be tight competition. Opening with a close back-and-forth between the sides, with Kalamunda scoring two minutes in, and Palmyra following three minutes later, it was a strong second-half comeback and a try from Claudia Foster at the 61st minute that guaranteed Palmyra the win. The final score saw Palmyra (15) defeat Kalamunda (12).
Tries for Palmyra were scored by Finekifolu Tu’imola (5’, 52’) and Claudia Foster (61’). Tries for Kalmaunda were scored by Chevy Brinkwork (2’) and Braxton Walker (28’), with a conversion from Libya Teepa (29’).
Palmyra will face Wests Scarborough in Round 3.
