Women in Rugby Round was celebrated this weekend, with all Senior Women’s teams descending on McGillivray Oval.

An acknowledgement of the contributions of women to Rugby Union in Western Australia, Women in Rugby Round provides the opportunity to celebrate the growth of the Women’s Rugby in WA, and the incredible athletes who continue to champion and fight for the game.

Southern Lions saw their second win of the season against UWA in a stellar performance. Despite being the competition’s newcomers, Southern Lions put forward incredible defensive efforts, tackling a growing UWA side at home to secure an eleven-point victory. The talent of Heather Kennedy was on full display for the Lionesses, with the Full Back crossing the line four times in an incredible show of power and athleticism, additionally scoring four conversions for the side. The final score saw UWA, 12, defeated by Southern Lions, 33.

Tries for Southern Lions were scored by Kennedy (4), and Leokadia Tairea, with Kennedy also completing all four conversions. For UWA, tries were scored by Bridget Meade and Renee Leechen, with one conversion from Sara Kifayatullah.

Perhaps the toughest battle of the day, Wests Scarborough took on Kalamunda, with incredible defensive efforts and talent all over the field. Two of the biggest sides in the 2025 competition, it was guaranteed to be one to watch, with just two points separating the final score. While Wests Scarborough were early to score, with Tizanae Kovacs crossing the line in the second minute, and Chylah Puki scoring for the side in the 25th minute, Kalamunda came back strong, denying the side any opportunity to score beyond that early timeframe. It was a conversion from Nicole Ledington in the 51st minute that really secured Kalamunda’s win, following a try from Nari Little in the 30th minute, and Zakiya Kereopa in the 50th. The final score saw Wests Scarborough, 10, defeated by Kalamunda, 12.

In the Women’s Community Xs, the seven competing teams took part in a Round Robin tournament, showing off the spirit of the game across the competition. The day kicked off with a huge game between Perth Irish and Wests Scarborough, with Wests’ Elizabeth Taylor putting four tries past the line, seeing a final score of 15-31.This was followed by two back-to-back losses for Perth Bayswater, with their battle against Wanneroo seeing a score of 0-17, and then against Mandurah Pirates, 31-0. Perth Irish scored their first win of the day against Palmyra, with Lucy Phelan scoring two conversions for the side to secure their 19-17 victory, which was then followed by a 5-7 victory for Rockingham against Wests. The Wanneroo Divaz saw another big win, scoring 32 points against Mandurah, 5, with Rockingham then securing the final victory of the day against Palmyra, 29-5.

The Women’s competition will see one final round this weekend before heading into Semi-Finals, with Wests tacking UWA at Bennett Park, Wanneroo facing Cottesloe at Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex, and Palmyra taking on Southern Lions at Tompkins Park. The top four teams will enter Semi-Finals the following weekend.
