RugbyWA is proud to announce John Welborn as a 2026 Life Member Inductee, recognising an outstanding contribution to rugby union in Western Australia spanning playing excellence, leadership, advocacy, and lifelong service to the game.
A Perth local, John’s rugby journey began at Langley Park in 1978 as an under eight fullback, the start of a pathway that would take him from Western Suburbs juniors to Scotch Collage, Nedlands Colts, and senior rugby with UWA and Associates.
He represented Western Australia across all levels, before making history in 1996 as the first Western Australian born and bred player to represent the Wallabies at Test level. At provincial level, he built a distinguished career with Eastern Suburbs and the NSW Waratahs, earning 63 caps, and also played professionally in South Africa, the UK, and France.
In 2006, he returned home as a foundation player for the Western Force, playing a key role in establishing Super Rugby in Western Australia.
Off the field, John has continued to shape the game through leadership and advocacy. As a former President and now Chair of RugbyWA, he has strengthened government relationships, supported grassroots growth, and helped drive the vision for a permanent Home of Rugby.
Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh said, “John Welborn’s contribution to rugby in Western Australia is exceptional.
“John broke barriers as the first locally developed Wallaby and he continues to give back to the professional and community game through outstanding leadership and advocacy.”
Please join us in congratulating John Welborn — a truly deserving RugbyWA Life Member.
