The South West Summer 7’s marked a successful Senior 7’s competition.

The first Senior 7’s competition of the WA 7’s Series, the Margaret River-based tournament was a brilliant display of the rugby talent in Western Australia.

With teams travelling from throughout the state, some even making their own teams specifically for the event, the competition saw metro and regional clubs coming together in competition. 250 participants and twenty teams competed across the day, with 10 teams in the Men’s Open, five in the Women’s Open, and five in the Men’s Social.

Southern Lions’ WestOz Nomads emerged victorious in the final for the Men’s Open, defeating Give Rugby 26-0. Tries were scored by Mataiasi Turagava (2) and Saimoni Qaranivalu (2). Both players also scored successful conversions, with Qaranivalu converting two and Turagava converting one.

The Cottesloe Shegulls defeated the Southern Lionesses to clinch victory in the Women’s Open final, with a 7-19 victory. Katie Barnes was the game’s top try scorer with three tries, with conversions from Jessica Foster and Langley Sesega.

In the Men’s Social division, Cruiser Corner SC saw four wins and no defeats, topping the tournament ladder. They were followed by the Margaret River Gropers, who saw three wins and one loss, showing the talent of the Southwest.

Southern Lions’ All Abilities team also took to the field in two exhibition games, taking on two Barbarians sides, made up of Cruiser Corner SC and Margaret River Gropers players.

Teams also sported orange ribbon at the tournament in support of the 16 Days in WA campaign, to eliminate domestic and family violence. 16 Days in WA aims to raise awareness, motivate positive action and highlight organisations, agencies, communities and individuals taking action to end violence against women.

The Southwest Summer 7’s are proudly supported by RugbyWA, Margaret River Gropers Rugby Club, HSBC SVNS PER, the Shire of Augusta Margaret River and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

Congratulations to all the teams who were involved.
