Defence West is the body responsible for the implementation of the Western Australian Government’s Defence and Defence Industry Strategy, including growing the State’s defence industry ecosystems, continuous naval shipbuilding and supporting defence innovation and veterans.

The MoU was signed at the Indo Pacific Sea Power Conference and International Maritime Exposition (INDOPAC 2025) in Sydney on Tuesday.

The MoU between the two bodies has been established to leverage the universal nature of rugby to strengthen engagement with defence industry partners and personnel. Through this collaboration, both organisations will work together to build shared experiences which create mutual benefits that enhance both the rugby and defence communities, including community integration for visiting personnel, community support for current and retired defence personnel, and opportunities to participate in local tournaments for worldwide armed forces teams.

Hon Paul Papalia CSC MLA, Minister for Defence Industries, said in a statement: “This MoU is a powerful example of how sport can be used to build bridges between communities and industries.

“RugbyWA’s strong grassroots presence and international defence connections make it an ideal partner to promote awareness of WA’s defence industry.

“Through this collaboration, we’re creating new pathways for veterans, supporting workforce development, and strengthening WA’s role in the AUKUS partnership.”

RugbyWA Chief Executive Officer, Simon Taylor, said: “RugbyWA is proud to formalise our collaboration with Defence West through this Memorandum of Understanding. Rugby has a long and deep connection with the armed forces around the world, and this partnership provides a meaningful opportunity to build on that tradition here in Western Australia. Together, we aim to create stronger connections between the rugby and defence communities, fostering inclusion, wellbeing, and shared experiences that benefit players, personnel, and families alike.”

RugbyWA looks forward to continuing to work with Defence West and its communities to help foster a vibrant rugby ecosystem throughout Western Australia.
