The Champions of Rugby competition returns in 2026, celebrating grassroots rugby clubs across Western Australia that are leading the way in creating positive, inclusive, and healthy club environments.

Delivered in partnership with Healthway, the initiative recognises the vital role community clubs play beyond match day – supporting player wellbeing, strengthening community connections, and promoting positive behaviours across rugby communities.

Champions of Rugby shines a spotlight on the impact clubs have off the field. From prioritising mental health and inclusion to fostering strong volunteer culture and safe, welcoming environments, the campaign celebrates the everyday efforts that make clubs great places to play, coach, volunteer, and belong.

In 2026, the campaign takes a renewed focus on holistic health and wellbeing, raising awareness of mental health, promoting healthier lifestyle choices, and supporting safer, more welcoming spaces for all members.

Clubs will be evaluated based on initiatives delivered across four key focus areas:

  • Promoting holistic health and wellbeing
  • Mental health
  • Promoting healthy eating
  • Preventing and reducing alcohol use

Points are awarded for evidence of practical, season-long initiatives, with the club achieving the highest overall score crowned the Champions of Rugby. Full evaluation criteria can be viewed here.

The winning club will receive $5,000 to invest in approved projects or goods that support health and wellbeing initiatives within their club.

In 2025, Ellenbrook Vipers Rugby Union Club claimed the Champions of Rugby title. Club President Janine Briggs said they had plans for the prize money to be invested into mental health initiatives. The focus reflects the Vipers’ strong commitment to supporting player wellbeing throughout the club, ensuring players wellbeing is support on and off the field.

Champions of Rugby celebrates clubs that put people first. In 2026, it’s your opportunity to showcase the positive difference your club makes and be recognised as a true Champion of Rugby.
