Fortescue Premier Grade - Round 16 Preview

The Fortescue Men’s Premier Grade is set to enter its final round ahead of finals, with teams across the conferences entering their do-or-die moment of the competition. 

With space for the top 4 teams of Conference A and top 2 teams of Conference B, it’s set to be a tough week as teams battle for their chance to make finals. 

 

With only a few points separating Kalamunda, Southern Lions and Joondalup Brothers in Conference B, all three sides will be searching for a win to keep their finals dreams alive. 

Joondalup Brothers, who are currently sitting three points behind Kalamunda, will face Southern Lions this weekend. 

Joondalup Brothers are coming off a win heading into Round 16, defeating UWA in a 36-41 battle at McGillivray Oval. Just one try kept Joondalup ahead of the top-of-Conference B side, with a tight battle ending with a try and conversion on the 80-minute mark. Tries for Joondalup were scored by Rhys Richardson (3’), Jacob Mounsey (36’, 48’), Ioana Valentino (53’), Louie David (72’) and Shaun Craven (80’). Four conversions (3’, 36’, 72’, 80’) and one penalty (9’) were scored by Keillen Cullen. For UWA, tries were scored by Ben Holland (21’), Joshua Thomas (40’), Jordie Bungard (46’), Thomas Anderson (65’) and Dante Tatafu (77’), with four conversions (40’, 46’, 65’, 77’) and one penalty (5’) from Bradley Roderick-Evans. 

Heading into Round 16, Southern Lions are coming off a loss to Kalamunda, pushing them down one place on the Conference B ladder.  

In Round 15, tries for Southern Lions were scored by Raikadroka Rafaele, Mosese Tuisavea Fale, Craig Atthis and Meli Naborisi, with two conversions and a penalty from Saimoni Qaranivalu. From Kalamunda, tries were scored by Braydon Forrest (6’), Adriu Duvuduvuduvukula (20’, 50’), Max Sawers (42’), MAlachi Te Muunu (71’) and Jack Weir (76’). Conversions for the side were completed by Te Aroa Koiatu (21’, 43’) and Evan Jordan (77’), with both Jordan (79’) and Koiatu (40’) also scoring one penalty each. 

Southern Lions will take on Joondalup Brothers this weekend at HBF Arena, with kick off set for 3:30PM. 

 

In the Championship Grade, Rockingham are set to take on Mandurah Pirates Blue in Round 15 of the Championship Grade. 

With Mandurah Pirates Blue currently sitting at the top of the Championship Grade ladder, it’s set to be a challenge for Rockingham. The last time the sides met was in Round 6, where Mandurah saw a 40-point victory over the side. 

Rockingham are emerging from a tough battle against Curtin University, where they lost to the Rams 17-15. In a game in which only one conversion kept them apart, tries for Rockingham were scored by Kaleb Gibson (9’), Jordan Hanson (36’) and Gert Venter (55’). Tries for Curtin were scored by Philip Whittington (15’, 16’) and Samuel Javapro (15’), with a conversion from Xavier Short (15’). 

Mandurah Pirates also saw a difficult match only won by a single conversion in Round 14, as they came up against Dunsborough & Busselton Dungbeetles at home. Finishing victorious with a 35-32 score, tries for Mandurah were scored by Jamie-Daniel Lam (16’), Ashib Leota (36’), Tarzan Smith (50’) and Jaron Plummer (58’), with three conversions (17’, 37’, 59’) and three penalties (4’, 10’, 27’) from Andrew-Shane Taitoko.From the Dungbeetles, tries were scored by Chris McLean (2), Kaleb Hapi-Angel and Facundo Salas, with three conversions and two penalties from Daniel Dewaal.  

Mandurah Pirates Blue will face Rockingham this weekend at Lark Hill Sporting Complex, with kickoff at 3:00PM.
