Round 9 of the Senior Men’s competition did not disappoint, with big wins and tough competition.
As it creeps closer and closer to the sticky point of the 2025 season, the Fortescue Men’s Premier Grade is proving to be a tough competition, with just a handful of points separating the top five.
Wanneroo continues on their winning streak for 2025, showing their skill and power after a bottom-of-the-ladder finish in 2024. With a plethora of Western Force Academy young guns moving into the Premier Grade side after being part of Wanneroo’s juniors' program, the side has consistently put on incredible performances throughout the year to see them placed in the top five heading into Round 10.
Their Round 9 win against Joondalup Brothers at Kingsway Reserve saw the side dominate from the first few minutes, with a try from Luke Callan in the third minute, followed by AJ Preketes in the sixth minute. With a runaway win, Wanneroo put thirteen tries on the board, with Joondalup Brothers pushing past their strong defenses to also put three behind the line. The final score saw Wanneroo walk away with the win, 83 to Joondalup Brothers’ 21.
Tries for Wanneroo were scored by Callan (3’, 62’), Preketes (6’), Brodie Mainwaring (13’, 73’), Thomas Crofts (20’), Andrew Romano 935’), Rickie Harte (39’), Manase Mohuanga (40’, 58’), Jacob Whitaker (45’, 79’), and Stirling MacDonald (51’). Conversions were completed by Luke Ale (6’, 13’, 20’, 35’, 49’, 51’, 62’), as well as Crofts (73’) and Mainwaring (79’).
For Joondalup Brothers, tries were scored by Rhys Richardson (24’, 42’) and Ford Hemi (65’), with three conversions from Maddox Manawatu (25’, 43’, 66’).
At Bennett Park, it was a close back-and-forth between Wests Scarborough and Southern Lions, with three points separating the sides in the final score. With nine penalty goals scored throughout the match, it was a tough, closely matched contest, keeping the sides on their toes. Down to the last second, a penalty goal awarded to Southern Lions right before the final buzzer saw the side secure their 31-28 victory over Wests Scarborough.
Tries for Southern Lions were scored by Papillon Sevele, Kameli Tacikalou Naisiroki (2) and Raniera Whakataka, with one conversion from Edward Turagava, and three penalty goals completed by Joel Lamatoa.
For Wests Scarborough, tries were scored by Daniele Cakaubalavu (45’) and Connor Hulme (76’), with six penalty goals scored by Ross Cadzow (8’, 14’, 31’, 35’, 41’, 58’).
Round 11 of the Senior Men’s competition continues this Saturday, with the annual Belt Up Round taking place across the competitions. The featured Belt Up Match will take place at Tompkins Park, with Palmyra taking on Wanneroo in the Fortescue Men’s Premier Grade, streaming live on Stan.
