One of the oldest rivalries in Western Australian sport is set to reignite on Saturday July 25 as Associates rugby club hosts Cottesloe at Allen Park for the monumental Battle of Broome Street alongside their inaugural Ladies Day celebrations.

With both sides fielding formidable line-ups in 2020, this battle is expected to be like no other as they fight it out for the prestigious Bill Hassell Perpetual Trophy.

Cottesloe will enter the contest as the reigning premier grade champions and will be eager to retain their status as the kings of Broome Street having defeated Associates in both of their meetings in 2019.

Intoxicated at the thought of revenge, Associates will be hoping to transform the ‘Boneyard’ into a fortress, having not held bragging rights since 2018.

The fixture is renowned for its mouth-watering and high-octane style of play and is a date that is firmly pencilled in on both club’s calendars.

Associates premier grade captain Lachlan Valentine says the ‘Soaks’ side are chomping at the bit to play Cottesloe.

“The Battle of Broome Street is definitely a game we as a club look forward to every year as the fixtures are released.

“There’s such a strong rivalry between both clubs and being a kilometre or so down the road from each other just adds fire to the rivalry.

“There’s a lot of history between the two clubs and all the boys in gold and green certainly can’t wait for this one.

“It should be a great day for not only Associates and Cottesloe but club rugby in Perth so it would be great to see as many supporters down at the game dressed in their Soaks colours.

Cottesloe’s physical presence in the forwards has served them well in the Battle of Broome Street which has allowed their attack to flourish in years gone by.

The Associates side harbours a potent attack that can strike venom into any opposition and will certainly keep the Cottesloe defence on high alert.

Premier grade won’t be the only action on display as third grade kicks off from 12:30pm. while second grade take to the field at 1:50pm.

Alongside the local derby Associates Rugby Club will be hosting its inaugural Ladies Day down at the club, inviting all members of the community to come down and enjoy some of the best entertainment in offer.

The club has put up a champagne marquee adjacent to the field giving spectators the best view of the match the club can offer.

Associates Rugby Club looks to this event to unite the community back together as COVID-19 restrictions start to ease, hoping that through the love of rugby and desire to have a good time can bring people together for an afternoon of fun and riveting community rugby action.
