Containers for Change
Containers for Change

Containers for Change is Western Australia’s container deposit scheme, helping keep eligible drink containers out of landfill and giving them a new life through recycling.

Each year, Western Australians purchase more than 1.45 billion containers, many of which would otherwise end up as litter or in general waste. Through Containers for Change, accepted containers – including plastic and glass bottles, cans, cartons, and pouches – are returned to a refund point, sorted by material type, processed into recyclable material, and sold to accredited recyclers, where they are remade into new products, including new drink containers.

Every returned container provides a 10¢ refund, which can be kept or donated to a charity, community group, or school, creating environmental, social, and economic benefits across the state.

As a Supporting Partner of RugbyWA’s Sustainability Partner program, Containers for Change has launched the Containers for Change Impact Ladder, an initiative that recognises and rewards community rugby clubs for their recycling efforts, while promoting sustainability and grassroots development across Western Australia.

Containers for Change Impact Ladder

The Containers for Change Impact Ladder is a RugbyWA sustainability initiative, delivered in partnership with Containers for Change, that recognises and rewards community rugby clubs for their recycling efforts.

The objective of the campaign is to encourage clubs, players, coaches, administrators, and supporters to turn everyday recycling of eligible 10¢ drink containers into measurable environmental impact and direct support for grassroots rugby.

Participating clubs will work towards a shared goal of reducing waste, with rankings based on the number of eligible containers recycled. These everyday actions add meaningful environmental and community outcomes. Eligible clubs can receive up to $250 (including GST) from Containers for Change to help support recycling activities and promotional resources.

Players, coaches, administrators, and supporters can choose to donate their 10¢ container refunds to their nominated RugbyWA club or to the Rugby Foundation of WA, directly contributing to grassroots rugby, club development, and local community programs. At the end of each campaign cycle, the club that has recycled the highest volume of containers will be awarded $2,000, generously funded by the Rugby Foundation of WA, to further invest in its club and community.

Clubs can get involved by registering through the Containers for Change link below and accessing their unique club code and Impact Ladder resources. The Containers for Change Impact Ladder will also feature at upcoming RugbyWA events – keep an eye out for the calendar.
