At RugbyWA, sustainability and grassroots growth aren't competing priorities – Containers for Change shows how one drives the other.
Since 18 April, our clubs have collected 40,499 containers – 6.4 tonnes of recyclable material, averaging 547 containers a day, purely through the everyday habits of players, families and supporters. Looking at the club network's full history, the numbers tell an even bigger story: 743,454 containers collected, translating to 120.6 tonnes diverted from waste, 966.9kL of water saved and 138.4 tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided – the equivalent of removing 33 cars from WA roads. *
This isn't recycling as an afterthought. It's measurable environmental impact, built entirely through community participation, and it's a useful proof point of what a RugbyWA partnership actually delivers: reach that goes deeper than a logo on a jersey. Every eligible container returned strengthens a club's leaderboard position, unlocks funding of up to $250 for that club and feeds into a $2,000 prize funded by the Rugby Foundation of WA. It's grassroots engagement with a clear, trackable outcome, running through the same infrastructure – club networks, family participation, community pride – that carries partner messaging across the state.
Put simply: when a partner backs RugbyWA, they're backing a distribution network that's already proven it can mobilise thousands of people around a shared, low-friction action. That's a capability worth understanding, whether the next campaign is about sustainability, participation or brand visibility.
The mechanics of the Impact Ladder mirror what makes any good commercial partnership work. Clubs register, get a code and start collecting – no complexity, no barrier to participation. The leaderboard turns individual contributions into collective momentum, the same way strong partner activations turn brand presence into community goodwill. And the upside is shared: clubs benefit, the Rugby Foundation of WA benefits, the environment benefits. This is community engagement design at its most effective – low effort, high frequency, compounding return.
With the season in full swing, container volumes are set to climb, and RugbyWA will continue backing clubs with resources and promotion to keep the leaderboard climbing with them. Every container tells the same story: small, consistent actions, taken together, build something substantial. That's true of recycling.
