Rugby in Western Australia is experiencing remarkable momentum, with 2025 delivering one of the strongest years of growth across every level of the game. Total participation increased by 11.6%, bringing the WA rugby community to 14,503 registered members - a milestone that reflects both rising demand and the strength of the environments created by our clubs, schools, volunteers, and partners.

The backbone of community rugby also continued to strengthen. WA now has 570 accredited coaches, representing 9% year-on-year growth, and 168 match officials, a significant 39% increase that ensures competitions remain safe, professional, and enjoyable. Volunteer engagement also reached new heights, with 1,701 volunteers supporting clubs across the state, up 9.1% from the previous year.

Across the Senior Men’s competitions, the sport saw substantial expansion, with participation increasing 22.7% to 2,793 players competing across 60 teams. The Fortescue Premier Grade featured 11 sides, complemented by 6 Championship Grade teams and a broad mix of community-level competitions that continue to deepen the talent pool and support club growth.

Women’s and girls’ rugby remained one of the standout success stories of the year. Female participation overall rose by 14%, with 798 Senior Women’s players (11.3% growth) and 969 Junior Girls players (18.85% growth) contributing to a thriving landscape. Fourteen Senior Women’s teams competed across Premier Grade and Community Xs, while dedicated pathways saw Under 14 and Under 16 girls competing in Friday night fixtures, each age group fielding five competitive teams.

Junior rugby also continued its strong upward climb, with 4,906 junior players (4.7% growth) representing 234 teams across 23 clubs. More than 1,638 junior matches were played throughout the year, from entry-level Get Into Rugby – Tri Time programs through to Under 18s. RugbyWA’s footprint in schools expanded significantly as well, with over 12,000 students participating in rugby programs and 5,143 students taking part in structured school competitions.

Growth was just as strong beyond the metropolitan area. The South West recorded 9.1% overall growth, alongside a 3.5% increase in player numbers, supported by strengthened regional competitions and targeted development efforts.

The 2025 season has demonstrated that rugby in Western Australia is not only expanding -it is thriving. Participation is increasing at all levels, community engagement continues to flourish, and the foundations supporting the game are stronger than ever.

These results reflect the combined dedication of our players, coaches, volunteers, officials, clubs, schools, and partners. Together, they form a growing rugby ecosystem that is building momentum year after year.
