Belt Up Round kicked off this weekend, with all clubs promoting the message to always wear your seatbelt, no matter the distance.

RugbyWA celebrated its annual Belt Up Round this weekend, marking eleven years of partnership with the Insurance Commission of Western Australia. Integrating the Belt Up message into community sports provides a platform to teach athletes about the importance of wearing a seatbelt every time they get into a car. This can help to form lifelong habits that prioritise safety.

Throughout the eleven years of partnership, the Insurance Commission has provided the grassroots community with more than $3 million in funding, in addition to over 25,000 Belt Up branded rugby balls, and over 3,000 pieces of other equipment including post pads, gear bags and training bibs provided to teams.

Palmyra had a big weekend away from home, seeing a 29-point victory over Southern Lions. Down at Success Regional Sporting Facility, Awhina Heke had a stellar performance, scoring a hattrick for the side, while Vesinia Schaaf-Taufa also scored two tries, with a final score of 5-34.  Building on their momentum from their victory in Round 6, Palmyra are steadily on a comeback from their earlier performances in the season, moving to fourth on the competition ladder.

Tries for Palmyra were scored by Heke (5’, 29’, 63’), Schaaf-Taufa (35’, 51’) and Melehifo Allana Sikimeti 48’), with two conversions from Kendra Fell (6’, 35’). For Southern Lions, their try was scored by Leona Yusia.

In the Women’s Community X’s competition, the Battle of the South saw Mandurah Pirates defeat Rockingham Flyers 44-26 at home. With try scoring machines out on the field, there were three hattricks scored across the two teams, with two of those players scoring a fourth. For Mandurah, Skipper van Peer proved to be the speedster to beat, crossing the line four times throughout the game, with Neisha-Leigh Tutara-Cecil also dominating on the field with three tries. Their scores were also supported by a try from Zoe Watkins, and two conversions from Maria Madigan.

For Rockingham, Cheyenne Campbell was a try scoring machine, with four tries for the side. Getting her side on the board, Campbell was also assisted by three conversions from Willow Leach.

The Senior Women's competition returns on July 5, 2025, following a bye round, with NAIDOC Round.

Crashes can happen in the blink of an eye. By making seatbelt use a habit, we’re taking control of our safety and the safety of those around us. Remember to belt up. Every ride, every time. Let’s make our roads safer for everyone and make sure we all make it home safely.
