Belt Up Round, presented by the Insurance Commission of Western Australia kicks off this Saturday across all RugbyWA grades and competitions.

In the annual Belt Up Round, RugbyWA sees its tenth year in partnership with the Insurance Commission of Western Australia.

A road safety awareness campaign, Belt Up promotes the wearing of seatbelts to reduce the severity of injury in a crash. With over 1200 people killed on Australian roads in 2023, it is vital for everyone to belt up.

Cottesloe are set to host Belt Up Round at Harvey Field.

The Fortescue Women’s Premier Grade enters its sixth round this weekend, as Belt Up Round kicks off across all grades and competitions.

Coming off a big win against UWA, Wests Warriors will take on Kalamunda Kweenz at Hartfield Reserve this weekend. Competing for spot number 2 on the ladder, the match proves to be an opportunity for Wests to level the points.

In their 53-0 defeat of UWA, tries for Wests were scored by Michaela Leonard, Kiera MacAskill, Roimata Toa (7’, 14’), Daisie Smith (27’), Hannah Palelei (30’), Haylee Hifo (41’), Brooklyn Joyce and Valuese Tiakia. Tiakia also completed four conversions for Wests.

Despite their big win, Wests will face a challenge when they come up against the Kalamunda Kweenz. Coming off the back of a win against Palmyra, last season’s Premiers continue to be a formidable force in the 2024 season.

With a 31-12 win over Palmyra, tries for Kalamunda were scored by Sophie Foster, Kitana Kamizona-Heke (2), Journey Kereopa and Hera-Barb Malcolm Heke. Conversions were completed by Nicole Ledington. For Palmyra, tries were scored by Penny Laufmann and Stella Masters, with a conversion from Kendra Fell.

The matchup between the two teams will kick off at 2:00PM at Hartfield Reserve and is set to be streamed live on Rugby Xplorer.

With Cottesloe set to host RugbyWA’s Belt Up Round event, both the men’s and women’s sides are set to take on Palmyra at Harvey Field.

In their second meeting of the 2024 season, the Cottesloe Shegulls are looking for their chance to take a win against Palmyra. In their last matchup, Palmyra saw a 20-point win, finishing 39-19.

Heading into Round 6, both sides are coming off defeats. Cottesloe saw a 53-10 loss to top-of-the-ladder Wanneroo, whilst Palmyra saw a 31-12 defeat to Kalamunda.

In Cottesloe’s match against Wanneroo, tries for Cottesloe were scored by Angelica Carr and Numi Tupaea. For Wanneroo, tries were scored by Anneka Stephens, Topaz-Jean Porter, Cass Kaisia, Ngamihi Monk, Tamika Jones (2), Shiane Kani, Sailah-Jayee Morris-Viti and one other. Four conversions were also scored by Lucy Lockhart for Wanneroo.

As the hosts for Belt Up Round, Cottesloe are looking for their second win of their season, using their home ground to their advantage. Sitting just below Palmyra on the competition ladder, the Round 6 opportunity offers Cottesloe the chance to get some more points on the board, show off their skills in front of a home crowd, and take on Palmyra.

Heading into the Round, the team is looking forward to continuing in their growth together as a unit.

“We try and look forward as a group and take each week as it comes,” Coordinator, George Scott said.

The team’s strength, Scott said, is in their ability to enjoy being together as a team.

“We play for each other and each other only.”

As they head into their next battle with Palmyra, the challenge becomes overcoming illness and injury to secure their next win.

“We’re hoping to see a great game of free-flowing rugby.”

Belt Up Round is set to kick off this Saturday across the grades. Cottesloe v. Palmyra is set to kick off at 2:00PM at Harvey Field, alongside the Fortescue Men’s Premier Grade, Reserves and Thirds as part of Cottesloe’s Belt Up event.
