The competition continues to get fiercer in the Fortescue Premier Grade, as the clock ticks down to Finals, with teams scrambling to secure their position in the last three games of the season.
Round 14 marked Mental Health Round, in partnership with Think Mental Health, and their 'Find Your Way to Okay' campaign. The ‘Find Your Way to Okay’ campaign acknowledges the unique circumstances and challenges experienced by young adults in Western Australia, and provides practical, evidenced-informed strategies to gain and maintain mental health and wellbeing. In Conference A of the Fortescue Premier Grade, a huge matchup between Palmyra and Associates took to the field at Tompkins Park, with the final score seeing a one-point difference. In a battle for the ages, Associates were seeking glory for their Club President, Kris Martinick’s 100th Premier Grade match, while Palmyra were looking to further secure their place in the Finals series for another year. In an incredibly even match, Palmyra had only put one try and one penalty on the board before half time, with Associates ahead by two. Palmyra came out the gate firing in the second half, keeping a solid lead until into the 75th minute, before Associates crossed the line twice in four minutes, putting them only a point behind Palmyra. With no time left to score, Palmyra held on to the lead to secure their 10th win of the season.
Tries for Palmyra were scored by Nakai (7’), Pisi Leilua (48’, 56’), Michael Tui (61’) and Hayden Cooper (72’), with one conversion (72’) and one penalty (35’) from Matt Mckenzie. For Associates, tries were scored by Joakim Larsson, Lincoln Bell, Ethan Stratton and Fionn McCabe, who also completed three conversions and one penalty.
In Conference B, Joondalup Brothers saw a huge upset, seeing a three-point victory over Southern Lions to secure their first win of the 2025 season. In a phenomenal performance from the side, it was a penalty goal secured by Hunter Cowan that kept the points at difference, leading to Joondalup finding their first win of the season. Both sides put four tries and three conversions on the board, with the game evenly matched, indicating the strength and capacity of both sides, leaving the result as Southern Lions, 26, defeated by Joondalup Brothers, 29.
Tries for Joondalup Brothers were scored by Maikali Rabaro (13’), Ollie Stone (20’), Ford Hemi (51’) and Sam Finau (66’), with three conversions and one penalty goal from Cowan. For Southern Lions, tries were scored by Peni Naqau, Wallace Charlie (2) and Liam McKinnon, who also completed three conversions.
