A record-breaking crowd flocked to Albany last weekend for the AFGRI Albany 7’s.

In its seventh year of competition, 71 teams took to the field last weekend for the AFGRI Albany 7’s for what was the largest 7’s tournament in RugbyWA history.

With teams travelling throughout Western Australia to compete, the tournament saw matchups between Southwest sides and metro teams, providing the opportunity for competition and growth throughout the state.

Thousands of players, coaches, parents and spectators were present at Eastern Pavillion as the two days of rugby took place.

“It’s been a great weekend down in Albany,” RugbyWA’s Regional Manager – Southwest, Jason Marrable said.

“We’ve had loads of teams coming from regional WA and getting to play teams that they never usually get to play. We’ve seen some great rugby on show.”

Part of RugbyWA’s WA 7’s Series, the AFGRI Albany 7’s marked the first of three 7’s competitions hosted within the state, as well as the first of two hosted in the Southwest. The event also saw RugbyWA partner with AFGRI, who were the event’s naming rights sponsor.

“It’s been great having AFGRI involved this year supporting the event,” Marrable shared. “It’s been great having them here supporting local grassroots rugby in Albany and regional Western Australia.”

Competing clubs included ARKS, Albany Storm, Associates, Bunbury Barbarians, Cottesloe, Dunsborough-Busselton Junior Dungbeetles, Ellenbrook Vipers, Esperance Redbacks, Joondalup Brothers, Kalamunda Districts, Mandurah Pirates, Margaret River Gropers, Nedlands, North Coast, Palmyra, Perth Bayswater, Wanneroo Districts, Wests Scarborough, Kwinana Wolves, South West Spirit and Swan Suburbs.

Congratulations to all teams who competed, and to the Cup, Shield and Plate winners from all grades.
