Match of the Round

Wanneroo v Southern Lions, 3:30pm, Kingsway Sports Complex, Madeley

Pulling off a memorable comeback proved to be fruitless for Wanneroo last week as they settled for a 24-24 draw on the foreshore.

They will face a different beast in Southern Lions who have victory on their mind in this week’s Fortescue Match of the Round.

The slippery feet of Wanneroo winger Jordan Grattan stumped Nedlands defenders last week and earned him a place in Rugby WA’s team of the week as he suits up on the left wing for Saturday’s clash.

Southern Lions were in scorching form to beat Curtin in round six and will look to climb their way up the rankings as they sit in 8th place.

Arks v Wests Scarborough, 3:30pm, Harrisdale Community and Sporting Pavilion, Harrisdale

Wests Scarborough are in the fight to keep their finals hopes alive as they head to Harrisdale to tackle ARKS.

Despite an impressive display, West’s proved to be their own worst enemy on Saturday as they watched Cottesloe sail into the horizon with another win.

The stalwart front row of Nick McClennan and Dylan Hutchins kept the Cottesloe forwards at bay, and they will look to terrorize the ARKS scrum on Saturday.

Packing a fierce forward pack themselves, ARKS continue to search for their first victory of the season and will hope they can produce some magic when the ‘Boars’ arrive in town.

Cottesloe v Coastal Cavaliers, 3:30pm, Harvey Field, Cottesloe

After Snatching a rare win at the ‘Pig Pen’ Cottesloe are flying high as their undefeated run in 2020 continues.

Sitting on equal points at the top of the table alongside Joondalup, the ‘Gulls’ conceal the stealthy chemistry of Caleb Young and Tobias Hoskins who have been bamboozling defences from round one.

Cottesloe will host the Coastal Cavaliers who endured a disappointing result against Palmyra last week, but will no doubt be packing some heat with the likes of Luke Petherick and Liam van der Heyden amongst their ranks.

Palmyra v UWA, 3:30pm, Tompkins Park, Applecross

The ‘Students’ of UWA will have their hands full on Saturday as they collide with the venomous Palmyra.

With only four points splitting the teams, tensions could boil over with either side vying for their place in the top four.

Both sides enter round 7 with comfortable wins but it was Palmyra who impressed most with a 73-0 win over Coastal Cavaliers while they also had players scattered across Rugby WA’s team of the week including young Fionn McCabe who continues to impress at the ‘Oasis’.

Perth Bayswater vs Nedlands, 3:30pm, Pat O’Hara Reserve, Morely

Despite a 17-point loss to UWA over the weekend, Perth Bayswater are starting to play rather an attractive brand of rugby.

Look out for fly-half Jamie Kinnimont on the weekend as he had a blinder of a match last weekend, linking up well with his halfback well to deliver very clean ball to the hard running ‘Baysie’ backline.

Nedlands will be itching to regain some momentum after their agonizing draw to Wanneroo.

One big name missing off the team sheet this week is number eight Aidan Laxton his physicality will definitely be missed however the return of star fullback Kauri Cudd could be the boost Nedlands need to come away with a dominant victory.

Kalamunda vs Curtin University, 3:30pm, Hartfield Park, Forrest Field

With such a big an abrasive side, Kalamunda will want to get the jump on Curtin early in the game if they hope to stop the ever-improving Goats side.

One name to look out for is Jackson Bond coming off the bench for the Bulls. His hard hitting hard running style is enough to rattle any team.

This match is definitely a good opportunity for Curtin to take one of the bigger scalps in the Fortescue Premier Grade. An upset win on Saturday would definitely send the message that they are here to stay and compete at this level.

Associates vs Joondalup Brothers, 3:30pm, Allen Park, Swanbourne

Arguably this Soaks vs Brothers battle will be the most hotly contested match in round seven of the Premier Grade. Associates will be running out a number of highly experienced players including veteran Hugh Norcross.

Norcross will be running out for his 150th cap in the Premier Grade and will be glad to know that Clay Uyen is not lying up opposed to him in the number 15 Brothers jersey.

However, hard runners such as captain Sheldon Tarawa and Kade Pearce will be enough to worry about as Soaks will hope to deliver Joondalup’s first loss of the season in this top three hit-out.

It won't only be bragging rights on offer for this hit-out but the RugbyWA Cup now that Joondalup will have to defend the title on the road after beating both Nedlands and ARKs at home.
