Belt Up Match of the Round – Premiership Division

UWA v Wanneroo, McGillivray Oval. Brockway Road, Mount Claremont. Kick-Off at 3:30pm.

This weeks’ special edition of the Belt-Up Match of the Round will be heading to the epicenter of Western Australian Rugby at McGillivray Oval where UWA will be looking to extend their hand in the Premiership top four against a lethal Wanneroo side.

Coming off the back of their loss to Nedlands on the Foreshore last week, UWA will be hungry to prove that they are still contenders to win this year’s Fortescue Premier Grade and there will be no better round to do it than being on display in the Belt-Up Match of the Round.

Last week’s disappointing loss to Western Suburbs rivals Nedlands marked a distasteful start to their Premiership campaign, however they will be confident going into this encounter having beaten Wanneroo 29-20 earlier on in the season.

Wanneroo’s trip to McGillivray Oval this weekend will be their second to the venue this year and they will be hoping to travel back North with another win in what has been a successful season for the club.

Wanneroo also suffered a loss last week, going down heavily to Wests Scarborough who proved dominant up front in the forward pack.

Premiership Division

Wests Scarborough v Cottesloe, Bennett Park. Millcrest Street, Doubleview. Kick-Off at 3:30pm.

In what will be another titanic clash in the Belt-Up round, both clubs will be coming into this round with a well-furnished victory under their belt.

The ‘Boars’ enter this game having comfortably overcome Wanneroo by 40 points last week.

Walter Koteka was the star of the show for Wests Scarborough converting seven out of seven conversions, along with two penalty goals and a sneaky try to go with it.

Captain Nicholas McLennan led by example for the ‘Boars’ crossing for a try as well.

Cottesloe will make the trek to Bennett Park having continued their dominant form in 2019 with an imposing 31-15 win in the Battle of Broome Street against Associates.

A physical encounter is expected at the ‘Pig Pen’ with both sides suiting up big forward packs this season.

Nedlands v Associates, The Foreshore, Cnr Broadway & Esplanade, Nedlands. Kick-Off 3:30pm.

Nedlands will host Associates for the second time in 2019 down at the Foreshore in another mouth-watering clash in this year’s Belt-Up Round.

Associates will head down the Stirling Highway a team walking wounded having been dominated against a brutally physical Cottesloe side at the boneyard last week.

Despite putting up a stiff challenge against the top side, ‘Soaks’ were no match for Cottesloe’s staunch defence and blistering attack.

If Associates are to be any chance against Nedlands they will have to eliminate the small errors that leaked into their game last weekend.

Nedlands on the other hand will be flying high going into the Belt-Up Round having brushed past UWA 28-10.

‘Neddies’ still only sit one point behind Cottesloe in second place, and a big win against Associates could see them dethrone Cottesloe as the top side.

Championship Division

Joondalup Brothers v Curtin University, HBF Arena. Kennedya Drive, Joondalup. Kick-Off 3:30pm.

Curtin will be on the road for the second week in a row as they head North to HBF Arena to tackle Joondalup.

The ‘Goats’ are still pursuing their first Fortescue Premier Grade win and this week’s Belt-Up Round could be the perfect opportunity for an upset.

Joondalup got their season back on track last weekend with a crushing win over Perth Bayswater at Pat O’Hara Reserve.

Having suffered a bruising loss to UWA the week before, Joondalup responded in an imposing fashion against the ‘Numbats’ with six tries.

Last week’s big win boosted Joondalup into the Championship top four to 27 points.

They lie beneath Kalamunda who are in third spot with 31 points.

Perth Bayswater v Coastal Cavaliers, Pat O’Hara Reserve. Wellington Road, Morley. Kick-Off 3:30pm.

This Championship Division match promises to be an electrifying encounter with both sides eager to finish off their seasons on a high.

Bragging rights will be up for grabs this weekend with the previous clash between the two sides offering up an invigorating spectacle that saw the Cavaliers run away with a 25-20 victory.

Perth Bayswater will want to respond well from last week’s disappointing loss to Joondalup, especially this round been a home fixture for the club.

The Cavaliers will arrive at Pat O’Hara with a fresh win having toppled Curtin 59-3 in front of a solid home crowd last weekend.

Cavaliers halfback Matthew Griffiths gets another honorable mention this week after a good day out against Curtin that saw him score two tries while also kicking seven from nine with the boot.

Blake Taiwhati was also a revelation for the ‘Cavs’ last week running in two of the ‘Cavs’ nine tries.

Southern Lions v Palmyra, Success Regional Sporting Facility. Hammond Road, Success. Kick-Off 3:30pm.

The Fortescue Premier Grade Belt-Up Round continues as the Southern Lions host Palmyra for a thundering contest.

It will be a do or die clash for the Southern Lions who are in search for a big win to keep their Championship finals hopes alive.

The Lions currently sit in fifth spot on the Championship ladder, but a win this week could potentially see them leapfrog Joondalup into fourth spot.

The Lions took part in a high scoring affair against ARKS last week but were no match in the end as they succumbed 52-38.

Lions skipper Gregory Jackson led from the front against ARKS with two tries of his own while second rower Sam Toy also played a big part at lineout time and on the score-sheet scoring two tries.

Palmyra, despite sitting on top of the Championship ladder on 41 points, will be aware of the threat that the Southern Lions pose going into the Belt-Up round.

The Southern Lions are only one of two teams that have knocked off the top team Cottesloe in 2019, having beat them by one point back in round five in their own backyard.

Nonetheless, Palmyra established themselves as the team to beat in the Championship on Saturday with a commanding 62-24 win in last week’s Fortescue Premier Grade Livestreamed fixture.

Arks v Kalamunda, Harrisdale Field. Gracefield Boulevard, Harrisdale. Kick-Off 3:30pm.

Kalamunda will be heading to Harrisdale as the underdogs after a devastating 62-24 loss to Palmyra on Saturday.

The ‘Bulls’ were outdone by the slick Palmyra side that were on top of them from the get go and who proved more disciplined and more eager in the second clash between the two sides in 2019.

As for ARKS, they will be hoping to continue their groundbreaking season as they hunt for their 5th win in a row against the wounded Kalamunda team.

Securing their eighth win of the season ARKs came away with a sublime 52-38 win over the Southern Lions last week.

One man who shone for ARKs was Kitione Nairube who had a significant influence in their win last week with two meat pies.

With four rounds remaining in the Fortescue Premier Grade season, the result in this game could have major implications on the Championship ladder as ARKs and Kalamunda who sit in second and third positions respectfully look to chase down Palmyra who sit on top of the ladder
